As you are aware of the concern of the government to facilitate Nation Building, Empower Education Drives, Build Roads, and do all the good things to build a Stronger Economy, to make us feel proud of being an Indian, it has levied Service Tax @ 10% plus an education cess of 2% (for Education) plus higher education cess of 1% making it 10.3 % on the amount charged by the academy to any student enrolling for any course at the academy.

The Service Tax number can be had from the Central Board of Excise and Customs, by filling a simple form named ST-1. The same can be bought from any book seller, or be downloaded from the site.

You are required to charge the Service Tax to the student, and deposit the same to the government by the 5th of next month using form G.A.R. 7 or through online payment in any authorized bank.

You are also required to file half yearly returns before 25th October, and 25th April for the prevailing 06 months using form ST-3..

Please see that Service Tax is applicable to all the academies premises/location/ property wise. Each should apply for the same individually. The company has nothing to do with the collection and depositing of the Service Tax, and you solely responsible and liable for the same.

As a part of the government initiative, you can file your service tax before the 31st October 2004 for the past activities, and no question shall be asked for the same. For the future please maintain all records for all payments received at the academy and pay your service tax accordingly.
